About these terms
Word Scene: Lanternleaf (“the game”) is made by Brightquill, an independent developer (“we”, “us”). These terms apply to the Android app, the web demo and this website. By installing or playing the game you agree to them. If you are a child, or not yet an adult where you live, please read them with a parent or guardian, who agrees to them for you.
If you downloaded the game from Google Play, Google Play's own terms also apply to the download. How we handle information is explained in the privacy policy.
Who the game is for
The game is designed for everyone aged 6 and up. It is a story that grows up with its hero: later school years bring masked villains, storms, danger that is always resolved, and the loss of beloved grown-up characters. Losses are told gently and never shown on screen, and every hard chapter ends with warmth. The age rating shown in your app store (for example PEGI 7) applies. Parents may want to read along with younger children, and our help page has a note for parents.
Using the game
The game is free to download and play. We give you a personal, non-transferable permission to install and use it on devices you own or control, for your own entertainment and not for any commercial purpose. The game, including its story, text, levels, pictures, music and code, belongs to us or to those who licensed it to us; the fonts and other open-source parts are used under the licences listed in Settings → Licences. These terms don't give you any other rights in the game.
Please don't copy, sell, rent or redistribute the game or its pictures and music, and don't modify it, remove its notices, or try to cheat its systems or extract its code, except where the law allows you to do so. A screenshot or a short clip of your own play, shared for fun and not for sale, is fine.
In-game items
Glowink, hint tokens, boosters, stars, stamps, letters and other items in the game are part of the game only. They are earned only by playing, they cannot be bought with real money, and they have no value outside the game: they can't be sold, traded or exchanged for money or anything else. We may change how they are earned or used in an update, and we will never take away items you have earned as a penalty for not playing.
Your progress is saved only on your device. There is no account or cloud save, so if the app's storage is cleared, the game is uninstalled or the device is lost, we cannot restore your progress (Android's own device backup may restore it for you).
No ads
The game shows no ads and contains no advertising software. If we ever add ads in a later version, we will update these terms and the privacy policy first, and they will follow the rules for apps used by children.
Updates and changes to the game
We may update the game to fix problems, add content or change features, and we may stop offering the game or parts of it. The paintings of later chapters download from Google Play after you install the game; you need an internet connection for that. The web demo may change or be taken down at any time.
Our promise, and its limits
We make the game with care and try to keep it working well, but we provide it free and “as is”: we can't promise that it will always be available, error-free or suit every device. As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for losses that come from using or not being able to use the game, such as lost progress.
Nothing in these terms takes away the rights you have under the consumer protection laws of the country where you live, or limits any responsibility that the law does not allow us to limit.
Stopping
You can stop using the game at any time by uninstalling it. If someone uses the game in a way that breaks these terms, for example by selling copies of it, their permission to use it ends.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date, and mention important changes in the app's release notes. The version on this page is the one that applies.
