A boy on a wooden dock above the clouds looks up at a giant glowing tree with towers in its branches; a ribbon of golden light runs from his hand to the tree.

A word puzzle story

Word Scene: Lanternleaf

Every word is a spell. Trace it on the board, and the painting around you changes.

Sam Teasdale grew up in his family's tea shop. His name was crossed off the list for Lanternleaf, an academy of word magic built on a giant tree that drifts around the world. He goes anyway. Find the words to light lamps, brew potions, race through the sky, and work out who is turning the leaves blank.

Each school year the academy's tree drifts on to a new land, with new friends, new kinds of puzzles and new word magic to learn.
